Home media storage, streaming, and backups

By Andy - Posted on 06 January 2009

I've been thinking recently that I want to get some kind of data / media storage set up at home. We have a lot of family pictures, movies, songs, etc that are currently just sitting on a laptop that runs Windows XP.

My main concern is that we have no backup for that media. We have most of the family pictures burned to CD's so those are okay for now. But any new pictures we take will only be on the laptop HDD because burning them to CD is really a pain to do manually. Any of the other media like the movies and audio files aren't backed up at all.

I want some kind of mirrored RAID setup either on a custom built PC that runs Media Server software for streaming to my XBox 360 and PS3 or a COTS product like this thing.

That way I can have all my media on my network sharable to all devices including the main HDTV in the living room with backups in case a drive fails.

Anyone know a really good external, network enabled, streaming, HDD with RAID support?

Good morning. A joke's a very serious thing.
